MASSACHUSSETTS -- The number of venture-backed transactions hit a nine year low for the New England region in 2006, according to a report by VentureOne. The report stated that New England start ups received $3 billion in 2006, spread among 291 deals, representing the lowest number of deals since 1997. Local commentators differed in their interpretation of the numbers and the reasons why. Some felt that investors are looking elsewhere for investment by syndicating with other investors. Others think that the numbers are underreporting a rising number of "stealth mode" companies that are being funded but not reporting the funding for competitive reasons.
